This May Sound Crazy

Speech is silver, silence is golden.

I heard the shorter version of this phrase all my life. It mostly meant, “I’m not enjoying your conversation” or “Be respectful of others.” Having just heard the full version for the first time, I feel cheated. It says so much more.
The older I get – especially in the era of the internet and pop-up windows and televisions in almost every restaurant – the more I appreciate the profoundness of silence. That is not to say that I always embrace it. Some days, I outright fear it. Silence allows room for my thoughts, and those don’t always make great company. Trouble is, they need to be heard in order to move on their way. If I can find my way past the doubts and fears, I might just learn to hear the divine.
I am convinced that somewhere under the endless loop of why did they hurt me and why aren’t I good enough that we all somehow tapped into lies a factory-default I love you that the divine intended for us to hear.
Kimberly is searching for the default.
I like the idea of silence as a kind of reset button. There’s a lot of noise in the world.
Succinct and beautifully written. I’ve never heard the entire phrase before, either. However, I HAVE heard, “Silence is golden but duct tape is silver.”
